ew York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., have been abandoned.
The Bill of Rights has been revoked, and replaced with the Moral Statutes.
There are no more police—instead, there are soldiers. There are no more fines for bad behavior—instead, there are arrests, trials, and maybe worse. People who get arrested usually don't come back.
Seventeen-year-old Ember Miller is old enough to remember that things weren’t always this way. Living with her rebellious single mother, it’s hard for her to forget that people weren’t always arrested for reading the wrong books or staying out after dark. It’s hard to forget that life in the United States used to be different.
Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs, like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes, and how to pass the random home inspections by the military. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow.
That is, until her mother is arrested for noncompliance with Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. And one of the arresting officers is none other than Chase Jennings…the only boy Ember has ever loved.
I am rendered speechless.
This book had everything. I mean, wow, my heart is still racing from reading it. I had been waiting for this book to come out for months and, even though I know better, I did have high hopes for this book, and well, it did not disappoint me at all. It blew me away.
The plot was so intricate, the depth was amazing, and my mind is still reeling from it. It had so much going on, so many turns I was amazed and well, left shorten of breath. The author has packed this book with a lot of twisted and frankly, maybe too much was added. But I still love this book. I just felt like at every corner things were happening, from the thrill to suspense, the fighting all the way to the romance. I felt so sorry for the characters and wanted them to at least have a nice break, which only happened in the last few pages of the book. Nevertheless, this was an amazing book and the author, Kristen Simmons, has created a very different kind of dystopian book. A very believable one at that.
I have enjoyed this book thoroughly. I think I have said *typed* that a lot, but hell it's true!
It took me only 2 days to read this book. I would of finished it sooner but my classes had to interrupt my reading time...........
This was an amazing debut novel for Kristen Simmons.
The characters were wonderfully created and thought out. They were so human in their thoughts and actions. I could feel their emotions radiating off the pages as I read them, sucking me in, pulling me even farther into the world Simmons created.
From this, I fall in love with both the main MC's Ember and Chase, even Ember's mother.
I could feel Ember's love for her mother and the conflicting emotions for Chase, the love she has always had for him and the longing for him to be who he once was. I understood Chase's love for Ember, he's devotion to keep her safe at any cost.
At first, I thought what an amazing character Ember was, just like the heroines I love reading about. Strong and powerful, fighting to save those she loved. Never giving up or backing down. But then she would do something reckless, almost with no thought. I would change my mind, but of course, she would do something that made me love her character, as I did before, and even more.
Oh, and Chase.... His is definitely on my 'most sexiest male character' list right up there with Daemon from Obsidian, Tobias/ Four from Divergent, and of course Aiden from Half Blood.
Dear me, and the wolf eyes...oh.em.gee.......
There are just so many aspects to these characters and even the minor characters, which I loved also, I just can not write about them all.
I loved how Simmons added the flashbacks, she allowed us to see glimpses of how Ember and Chase's relationship started and how it developed. To see how much Chase has suffer from the war, and we then get to see why his is and why he acts the way he does. It was a great dimension in the book.
My heart is still pounding from the roller coaster this book was.
I got a pure adrenaline rush reading this. I was one of the characters, running and fighting for my life and for the one's I loved and for the people who suffered from the FBR, the government, the war. The world that Simmons created is so believable and truly scary in it's own right.
The plot was thrilling and the characters beautiful, this has as all the elements for fans of dystopia books.
All I can do now, is wait for the second book. And by god, it better be here soon.
