Layken Cohen isn’t your typical 18-year-old. After the recent death of her father, she is forced to be the rock for both her mother and younger brother. Outwardly, she appears resilient and tenacious, but inwardly, she’s slowly losing hope.

Enter Will Cooper: The 21-year-old new neighbor with an intriguing passion for “slamming.” Will and Layken immediately form an intense and emotional connection neither of them knew they needed until it was found. However, the two of them are slammed to the core when a shocking revelation forces their relationship to a halt.

Once again, Layken must put on a brave face and accept that which she cannot control, but when a family secret comes into play, it becomes the ultimate test of her resolve. Unable to accept the harsh reality of her future, Layken puts everything at risk and turns to Will for solace.

Both Layken and Will struggle as they attempt to find a balance between that which keeps them apart and the feelings that pull them together.

My Review

This was a heartwarming, exceptional and encouraging book.
I honestly loved it.

However, it felt a bit rushed at times.
And the emotions the characters experienced or showed felt only skin deep.
Though, it had good character development, to a point.

Layken and Will, the two main characters.
Two characters I have been routing for since I started this book.
Their love is love at first sight.
Defining and breath taking.
But it felt like, maybe to me, they fell in love too fast.
But that's probably just me.
(but I guess that's just love at first sight)
But I felt, at times, their love was so real, so deep, even if it built up too fast.

Even with that said,or typed, whatever....(rolls eyes)
it was such a heartwarming  read.

Layken learns to be strong, to fight and to find a balance between her head and her heart.

Will learns that life, it gets in the way, but you gotten fight back, take control, and take what you want.

At times  I could feel Will's and Layken's love, but as I mentioned, some moments it didn't feel, natural?
That's the best way I can describe it.
There wasn't enough depth at times.
But still, it was a refreshing and beautiful book.

Wonderfully written and I loved the "conflict" to why they couldn't be together!
I squealed when I found out.... :)
^^I had a lot of those moments ^^ :)

I wish the ending was different, no, correction, I wish there was more to the ending and the epilogue.

But, despite the downsides I have mentioned, I loved this book.
It was sweet, endearing, and touching.
I fall in love with the characters.
Hoped they all came out on top.

I cried with them
Laughed with them
And loved with them.

I also learned a bit about poetry, I was taken away by it.
And I might even want to see a slam..
that was something new for me and I enjoyed reading about it!!

This was certainly a delightful read.
The author definitely kept me engrossed with the story, made me want to know what happens
and made me fall in love with all the characters.

I also loved all the Avett Brothers lyrics/quotes that Hoover put at the beginning of each chapter.
I listen to the Avett Brothers, I enjoy their music, and I just found it awesome that the author liked them so much and incorporated them into the story the way she did.
(I'm actually listening to them as I type)

This story that Hoover wrote is undoubtedly an inspiration to anyone who is going through a hard time,it points out that life is  meaningful.
That tomorrow could be the end, without us even knowing it, so live.

And I am about to pick up the second part of Slammed,
Point of Retreat :)
Heh heh

Favorite Quotes:

“I got schooled this year

a boy that I'm seriously,

deeply, madly, incredibly,
and undeniably in love
And he taught me the most
important thing of all...
To put the emphasis
On life.”

“Question everything. Your love, your religion, your passion. If you don't have questions, you'll never find answers.”

“Don't take life too seriously. Punch it in the face when it needs a good hit. Laugh at it.”

“God Layken. How do you do it?    she says.
She blows her nose and grabs another tissue out of the box.
"How do I do what?"  I sniff as I continue to wipe the tears from my eyes.  "How do you not fall in love with him?"
The tears begin flowing just as quickly as they had ceased. I grab yet another tissue. "I don't not fall in love with him. I don't not fall in love with him a lot!”

“Imperfections define perfection”

" Life wants you to grab  all the organized, the alphabetized, the chronological, the sequenced. It wants you to mix it all together,
Stir it up,
blend it."
