Book Review: Enshadowed (Nevermore, #2) by Kelly Creagh

Enshadowed
(Nevermore, #2)

Kelly Creagh
YA/Paranormal/Fantasy

5 stars out of 5

Varen Nethers is trapped in a perilous dream world -- a treacherous and desolate realm where the terrifying stories of Edgar Allan Poe come to life. Isobel Lanley, plagued by strange visions and haunted by the nightmares of Varen's creation, is the only one who can save him.

Isobel knows that her only hope lies within a Baltimore cemetery. There, in the early morning hours of Edgar Allan Poe's birthday, a mysterious stranger known as the "Poe Toaster" will make his annual homage at the legendary poet's grave.

Only the Poe Toaster holds the key to the way between worlds. But even greater dangers lie ahead for Isobel. An ancient evil, draped in veils of white, is watching, challenging her for Varen's affections. When Isobel finally finds Varen, he is no longer the quiet and brooding boy who once captivated her, but a dark force, powerful and malevolent.

My review:
Okay, so it’s taken me awhile to get this review up. And I apologize to you guys about that! My fault, I have no excuse, except I am lazy!

This book... All I  can say is....Finally
I have been waiting for Enshadowed, not so patiently! And was it everything I was hoping for and it also took me on a ride I will forever enjoy.  I was thrilled to see what was going on in the world Creagh created. And to know what was happening to the characters, Isobel and Varen.

Nevermore, the first book, was amazing. It took me in, and revealed to me a world I couldn’t even imagine. So waiting the long anticipated  Enshadowed was worth it. I was really amazed had how Creagh combined Poe and her world together. Creagh was able to mix those to notions enchantingly.

“Is is any of this real?" she asked. "Are you real?"

Enshadowed starts off a little bit after Nevermore ends. Isobel is still trying to find Varen. But she’s at a lost. She only has one clue. Poe. And well there is also the mysteries Reynolds, but Isobel hasn’t heard nor seen him since she closed the portal.

All Isobel knows is she has got to be in Baltimore on January 19, for Edgar Allen Poe’s birthday. There she is sure to find Reynolds.  He is her only hope to finding out how to reach Varen and to bring him back.

As she is stuck trying to escape what had happened at the end of the first book, which has placed her under the careful eye of her parents. Her life has definitely changed since meeting Varen. The things that once mattered to her, aren't that important anymore. She’s seen things, creatures and a world she wouldn’t have imagine. Isobel now has a new perspective in life, and now the only thing that matters is Varen. Finding and saving him. And she won’t stop until she does. Even if it means her life.

She wanted to touch him, to throw her arms around him but something held her back.

I can definintely see much growth in Isobel. She isn’t that ‘cheerleader’ anymore. She has grown a lot since the things Varen shown her. Isobel knows that this isn’t’ the only world, that there are things ‘creatures’ out there. And she is determined to be a better person, determined to find Varen, determined to save him. I feel Isobel shown great courage and strength in Enshadowed. And as she searches for a way to save Varen, she starts to really understand and know him. I felt this helped her, in a way, to grow as a character. She begins to realize what love is. I was very proud of her, even when she felt like she was losing her mind, she kept going.

There were also some characters from the first book that return, and I was really happy to see them. One in particular is Gwen, Isobel’s one and only true friend. That girl is just spunk.  She has a spirit that is strong and courageous. Gwen, does what she can to help and protect Isobel. She helps Isobel when it came to finding Varen. I would love to have a friend like Gwen.

Another character who turned out to be quite different and not what I imagine was Pinfeathers. I was surprised by this character, this Noc, by the end I was able to figure out what he really was though. But I came to enjoy when he would pop up. Even though at times he only seemed to frighten Isobel. But despite him being a creature of the dreamworld, he took me by surprise and I really began to like this Noc.

Not only where those characters amazing, but even the villains were intriguing. I was really interested in who they were and the lore behind them.
I also loved learning about Varen, as Isobel slowly learned his secrets and who he was. He is really a character, and I can't wait to see where he'll be in the next book.

‘I keep telling myselfThat you’re just a girl.'

Another aspect of Enshadowed that was amazing is the world that Creagh created. I love her own spin on Poe’s demise. I, too, am a Poe fan, not a big one, but I enjoy some of his work. So to see how Creagh combines Poe, her story, and the dreamworld was stunning. At times it was creepy, yet had this very dark allure that I love. The feelings I was able to absord while reading left me with many emotions, to fear, love, excitement and even to the despair Isobel would feel.
The book, to me, was paced nicely and the flow was good. Even though things didn't really heat up till the end, and left me screaming at the book, I loved it.

Enshadowed was beautiful, it took me in and consumed me. Creagh amazed me once again, and I guess it’ll be a long and torturous wait for the next book!!
