Review: Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1) by Richelle mead

Vampire Academy

Richelle Mead

YA/Romance/Paranormal

3 stars out of 5
St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger...

Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.

My Review:

Why didn't I read this book earlier? I’m really glad I took the chance and started it. But you ask why did I only give it a 3 star rating? Well, I’m going to answer that question for you. Yes, Vampire Academy was pretty awesome, I loved the characters, especially spunky Rose, the story line kept me flipping the pages and I really enjoyed how Richelle made her vampires unique.

Now, as much as I did like the book, it just wasn't Oh.My.God, amazing! Why? I think it's because I'm really jaded when it comes to vampire books nowadays. I wish it wasn't so, but alas, it is.  I mean, you can walk into any bookstore and, bam, so many vampire books. Yes, some are going to be amazing, some okay, and others not worth it, it’s just that desire to read books about vampires is almost gone for me. Which is sad, I used to love reading about them!

But I do have to say, what Richelle did with her vampires was quite different. It drew me into her world, captured my attention and shown me that there can be an original spin on a vampire story.
"I'm really not good with impulse control."
For the characters, can I just say that I enjoyed them. Especially Rose, that girl likes breaking hearts, and just running her mouth! I really got a kick out of her, I liked that she didn't quit, no matter what, and how Lissa was so important to her, she protected her as best as she could. I guess the main reason I liked Rose is because she is a very strong heroine. And I love when the heroine in a story can kick some ass while taking names. Rose had that, even if sometimes she was a bit wild.

Alright, so don’t hate me for this but I just couldn't fall in love with Dimitri. I know! I know! I heard so many others who just loved this character, I did enjoy reading about him, but love him, no. I feel that is all linked to my ‘jaded-ness’ of vampire books. He’s a cool, silent character who seems to have a nice leveled head. And he does seem to balance well with Rose. Oh, and speaking of Rose, I really couldn't get a feel for their romance. It was nice, sweet, and did take my breath away at times. But if felt like there was something missing, I just can’t put it into words, though.

Lissa is also a character I enjoyed, she’s a Moroi princess, and at times I felt sympathy for her. She was a decent character. There were also a few side characters I did enjoy getting to read about. But overall, I feel Richelle did well  in creating some very interesting characters, though at times I did want to shake some of them.
"What are you? An After school special?"

Now, the whole plot of the story was interesting and drew me in. I loved Richelle’s whole take on vampires. She created a whole new lore about them, with Moroi, Dhampri and Strigoi. It was definitely a different take, and to me, brought a little bit of fresh air into the world of vampires. I think that is what mostly kept me flipping the pages.

The story had a nice pace, didn't leave me in the deep in. Kept my interest enough to finish the first book, however, I’m debating if I will even start the second book. The characters had originality, personality and spunk I enjoy reading about. But I feel it was the lore of vampires  that really made this book more, it gave it something a bit different from all the other vampire books out there. All in all, I did enjoy this book, but I couldn't love it.

However, if you are looking for a really different take on vampires with a story line that will capture your attention, I suggest you pick up this series!!

  7. I was so late to this party too but since this series is done, you really need to read the rest of the books back to back... with like no other books in between! It will be one heckuva roller coaster ride that way, lolol!

And I agree that book one was probably just meh but I guess that's because Mead was setting us up for all the crazy that she throws at us in the rest of the books! Speaking of the rest of the books, you have to continue them! The storyline, the love story, the friendship(s) get ten times better and a whole lot more intense!

Eep, I hope you love it (the whole series... all six books)!

  8. *sniff, sniff* Magen it's so sad you didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped you would! :( But, I understand why you didn't. I guess once you hear about something long enough, it eventually gets to you and not in a good way. But, I am glad that you liked the characters, especially Rose, and will continue the series. Trust me it gets WAYYYYYY better (no biased opinion here or anything! Think of my "opinion" as a though from the president...totally objective and third party! *wink*)

I can't wait until you pick up the other books! Fabulous and honest review!
