Review: The Collector (Dante Walker, #1) by Victoria Scott

Title: The Collector
Series: Dante Walker, #1
Author: Victoria Scott
Category:Paranormal/ Romance
Genre: Young Adult
Rating: 4 stars out of 5
He makes good girls...bad.

Dante Walker is flippin’ awesome, and he knows it. His good looks, killer charm, and stellar confidence have made him one of hell’s best—a soul collector. His job is simple: weed through humanity and label those round rears with a big red good or bad stamp. Old Saint Nick gets the good guys, and he gets the fun ones. Bag-and-tag.

Sealing souls is nothing personal. Dante’s an equal-opportunity collector and doesn't want it any other way. But he’ll have to adjust, because Boss Man has given him a new assignment:
Collect Charlie Cooper’s soul within ten days.

Dante doesn't know why Boss Man wants Charlie, nor does he care. This assignment means only one thing to him, and that’s a permanent ticket out of hell. But after Dante meets the quirky Nerd Alert chick he’s come to collect, he realizes this assignment will test his abilities as a collector…and uncover emotions deeply buried.

My Review:

The Collector… oh my lordy! All I can really say is I loved me some Dante Walker! Now, I’m going to be honest, at first, I was a bit unsure if I was going to love this book  or not. a Thankfully, I love it! Er, Dante. The Collector had elements that really surprised me. A great roundup of characters, a main guy who is literally bad to the bone, the main girl also really took me by surprise and let’s just say the world Victoria created was pretty darn awesome in my book!

I was pretty much hooked on The Collector by the first page. With Victoria’s catchy and unique writing style, I kept flipping those pages like a boss.
‘Maybe I shouldn’t be proud that the devil tells me his secrets. But I am.’

Characters are really something in this book, okay, Dante was really something. He is a very, uh, different kind of male character. He is bad. Period. Cocky and arrogant. I mean, he does work for the guy downstairs. But even with that bad attitude, killer looks, and awesome pair of red converses, Dante is more than what meets the eye. I will emit, he really showed some douchebagger moments, and at times I wanted to really smack this guy.

However, I had to keep in mind just who he is. He is The Collector, numero uno guy for the boss downstairs. He shows characteristics of selfishness, greed and egotism. That’s Dante. But with the progress of the story, with everything he goes through, he really also shows there is more to him underneath all that bad boy. I loved watching his character develop, seeing him change and grow before my eyes.

Now, Charlie was nothing what I imagine or thought she would be. And truthfully, I loved that about her.  She isn't your, I’m-pretty-and-I-have-no-idea type of heroine. She’s, well, average. And pretty dorky.  Shy but has a very big heart. When she first appeared, I was a bit worried about how her character would grow, but Victoria did an amazing job showing the transformation of Charlie.  She is the essences of true virtue and kindness, which leads to Dante wondering why the boss man wants her.  All in all, Charlie is a very unique character, and I came to really like her.

I also enjoyed the side characters that Victoria created. Each had a great place in the book, and I just enjoyed reading about them.
"I wonder what it would feel like to laugh like that, with complete abandon."

What I feel was the best part of this book is the character transformation that Dante goes through.  And watching how both he and Charlie grow together.  Along with the character development, the book flowed well. It was paced throughout each event nicely. Victoria also has a very catchy way of writing, it literally pulled me into the story.

As much as I do love this book, I do have some complaints, I felt that the ending was the only part that was rushed, to me, anyways. Everything came together well, but it just moved really fast and then it was the end of the book. However, even though it felt rushed, I enjoyed the ending. I really need the next book!! Also, I want to know why Dante was the devil’s right hand man. Yeah, Dante was a bad boy, but why? I just really wanted that questioned answered.
“I glance in the mirror. Surprise, surprise—I look finger-lickin’ delicious.”

The Collector is a sinfully delicious read, with a great band of characters, all unique in their own way. Victoria created a unique story, and a world that sucked me right in, and left me wanting more. This book shows real human flaws and desires. That even a good guy, can be bad to the bone.

  5. Yes! I loved that Charlie wasn't like your typical female protag and her character really shined through in this book. Dante was interesting, to say the least. Great review!
