Review: Ruined (The Eternal Balance #1) by Jus Accardo

Title: Ruined
Author: The Eternal Balance, #1
Category: Paranormal/ Romance/ Urban Fantasy
Genre: New Adult/ Mature content
Rating: 4 stars out of 5
Hell is looking for a way to break loose…

Jax lost the genetic lottery. Descended from Cain, the world's first murderer, he's plagued by a curse that demands violence in exchange for his happiness. He left everything behind, including the girl he loved, but thriving on the pain of others is lonely… And it's killing him.

After a series of heartbreaking losses, Samantha put rubber to pavement and headed for college as fast as her clunker could carry her. But she can't outrun her problems. When an attack at school drives her back home, she's thrown into the path of a past—and a guy—she's been trying to forget.

Sam strains Jax's control over his darkness, but running isn't an option this time. Someone—or, something—followed her home from school: a ruthless monster with a twisted plan centuries in the making. Forced together to survive, and fighting an attraction that could destroy them both, Jax and Sam must stop a killer bent on revenge.

 My Thoughts

Let’s just take a deep breath for a second. Just absorb the awesomeness that was this book.  Yes, deep breaths are required when reading this one, because it’s something completely different and completely captivating. I really don’t think I have read a book like this before. I mean I have read books about demons, but this one took it to a whole other level.

Descendants of Cain, born with a demon that lives inside of you, fighting to control the urges the demon brings forth. Well, that’s a lot to take in. but Jus Accardo did an amazing job creating this story and then letting us experience it. I found the idea of this book to be just fascinating. It was intense, dark, gruesome, and yet wonderful.
To keep the thing in check, I'd forced myself to feed it, committing one truly violent act every two days since I was seventeen.
The characters were really something else. Especially Jax. He brought a new kind of bad boy into the mix and I am not complaining. He was this cocky, arrogant guy with a real demon inside. Being the twin to carry the demon has affected Jax in so many ways, yet underneath all that trench coat wearing, bad boy persona, is a really amazing guy. I loved getting to know him, watch his experiences, and see him overcome the darkness that just surrounds him. Oh, and I can’t forget to mention the love this boy has for a certain girl. See him battle that love and the demon, provided some intensity I just couldn’t get enough of.

Sam is another tough chick I just really enjoyed. A bit headstrong but watching her and reading from her POV too, was a great way to see inside her character. The deep attraction between her and Jax is quite a burning flame, and watching them fight it was so much fun! I also loved was that Sam really cares for Jax. She also proved to be a strong character when she gets pulled into Jax’s dark world.

The book has quite a few characters. Some I can’t really talk about without giving some of the story away. But I definitely enjoyed getting to know the demon inside of Jax. And boy, that was an interesting development that that demon brought to the story.

There were also a few twists I didn’t see coming.  Along with the story development, the character development and the surprises, I stayed glued to this book! The pacing, though a bit rushed at certain points, flowed well and didn’t really drag or slow the story down. And I have to talk about the trench coat, for some reason I could not picture it being a sexy trench coat. I kept seeing Spike from Buffy. And he’s trench coat is so not cool, so I kept having to image Jax’s trench coat being awesome. It was hard sometimes. I don’t know why…
The demon rumbled, flashing nondescript images of blood and gore. This was the part I hated. It was also the part that the sickest side of me loved.
I found the intense darkness and gruesome factors fun to read about. I don’t know what it says about me, but I love dark books like this one. Gritty, bloody, and gruesome are right up my alley.

I definitely recommend Ruined to those who love dark books, with a nice plot, an interesting twist, and an intense romance. Ruined was an emotionally dark, twisted, and just plain fun read!
