One kiss could be the last.My Thoughts
Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.
Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.
Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.
But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.
Just when I think Jennifer couldn’t surprise me anymore, well, she goes and does it! Swipes me off my feet and takes me into an amazing world. And this world was filled with a demon that stole my heart, gargoyles that captured my attention, and a story line I just feel in love with.
It’s Jennifer’s writing style that just sinks its fingers into me and captures my attention. She flawlessly creates a unique world filled with some not so unique creatures and just waves her writing wand and BAM! she turns the old into something interesting and something quite new. Now I know, gargoyles are not something you encounter every day, but we have seen/heard about them so much in our daily life. And Jennifer gives them such an interesting flare!
“I lost myself the moment I found you.”
The characters were all interesting. Every last one. from the bad guys to the good guys to the ones you aren't so sure about. Each character was interesting and held their own personalities. Layla being no expectation. Layla, to me, is an interesting character. She has this internal and external suffering she is always battling. That alone makes you connect and empathize with her. She definitely dealt with a lot of inner conflict within herself. In the end, I found that despite all the suffering, struggles, and conflicting emotions, that Layla is a strong heroine. She just has this different, quiet, almost unbreakable strength. Even if she doesn't know it.
I can’t forget the two scrumptious males that enter this story. One gargoyle and one demon. Each an interesting mix and each bring their own twist to the story. First I wanna discuss Roth. Sexy demon Roth. From the moment he appeared I just fall for him. He’s a remarkable character, a demon with a heart. Though he is a demon, he really proved in the end that he had a heart, a really big one. I also found that he was a really honest character despite him being a demon. His dark appeal and I-don’t-give-a-damn attitude makes him such an alluring character.
Zayne is also an amazing character. And I’m gonna be honest. I adore both him and Roth. I loved how sweet and caring Zayne was. How he didn't really seem to stick to the age old traditions the other gargoyles stuck to. His strength and how he cares for Layla also really came through in the book.
I would never truly be a part of the Wardens. And no matter how badly I wanted it, I'd never really be their family.
The story line is so intriguing. Jennifer adds the dark elements sublimely, giving her book a realistic factor even though it deals with such paranormal parts. I genuinely loved how she had the gargoyle world open to the rest of the world while at the same time kept the demon world hidden. That brought in an intense factor. She also throw in some twist I did not see coming. A woven mix of surprise and shock. So much happened in this one book, I really don’t know where she is going to take the series. But I’m very eager to find out.
All in all, White Hot Kiss was amazing. An epic book in my mind. The story flowed perfectly, it had the right amount of action, suspense, mystery and plot twists. It had interesting characters combined with some really unique and weird creatures. And I didn't think gargoyles could be so kick-ass or that a demon would steal my heart, but it happened! I definitely recommend this series to those who need a new kind of paranormal romance!
