When a gorgeous young dancer walks through his door, a strip club owner must decide whether to follow his rules or his heart in the third novel by the author of One Tiny Lie and Ten Tiny Breaths.
Owning a strip club isn’t the fantasy most guys expect it to be. With long hours, a staff with enough issues to keep a psych ward in business, and the police regularly on his case, twenty-nine-year-old Cain is starting to second guess his unspoken mission to save the women he employs. And then blond, brown-eyed Charlie Rourke walks through his door, and things get really complicated. Cain abides by a strict “no sleeping with the staff” rule. But being around Charlie challenges Cain’s self-control…and it’s been a long time since any woman has done that.
Twenty-two-year-old Charlie Rourke needs a lot of money, really fast, in order to vanish before it’s too late. Taking her clothes off for men makes her stomach curl but Charlie tells herself that at least she’s putting her acting and dancing skills to good use. And though her fellow dancers seem eager to nab their sexy, sophisticated, and genuinely caring boss, she’s not interested. After all, Charlie Rourke doesn’t really exist—and the girl pretending to be her can't get distracted by romance.
Unfortunately, Charlie soon discovers that developing feelings for Cain is inevitable, and that those feelings may not be unrequited—but losing him when he finds out what she’s involved with will be more painful than any other sentence awaiting her.
I swear every book I pick up by K.A. Tucker I end up falling in love with! And Four Seconds to Lose was no exception. I loved getting Cain’s story; I've wanted to know more about that dark, sexy club owner for quite some time. And his story really was a great, intense and amazing one.
It’s no secret I love me some K.A. Tucker. She has a way with words and a way with building her stories, her characters, that suck me in. She really allows her readers to get in depth with her characters, emotional-wise. I love that! The pacing throughout the book was just to my liking, along with the buildup of the plot and the raw atmosphere. I loved the intense factors she added in, the emotional ones, that she is just so good at writing about!
“For all that I hate about what I've done, there’s one thing I can’t regret. It led me to him.”
Cain is a very deep person, though he might not have appeared as such during the first book, he really is. I loved getting to see that depth in him. Learning about his past, what he has overcome, and how he became who he is today and why he opened up a strip club was just incredible. Cain is a diverse character with a lot of true depth to him and seeing that, made me love him! He also grows a lot in the book, finally overcoming the obstacles of his past, facing them and moving on.
Charlie was a character I immediately came to like and wanted to know more about. Her story is intricate and very fascinating. Without spoiling much, I will say Charlie enters Cain’s life when hers is spiraling out of control. And she enters his when both need the other. Though her life isn't easy and it’s a life she doesn't want, I loved Charlie because of what she overcomes in the book. Learning about her and watching her grow, along with Cain, was just so much fun to watch happen.
The passion and chemistry between Cain and Charlie was a fun aspect of the book I couldn't get enough of! These are two characters that really were made for each other. I loved watching them get to know each other, grow, and fall in love. I also enjoyed the Charlie twists that where thrown in.
“I’m not afraid of anything, yet I think I’m afraid of Charlie. Not afraid of her. Afraid of having her. Of losing her.”
All in all, I adored this book! It is a great addition to the series and a wonderful read. It was dark, raw, beautiful, and intense. Four Seconds to Lose was an incredible book! And lovers of the series must pick this one up!
