James is skilled, efficient, and deadly, a hired blade navigating the shifting alliances of a deteriorating Assassin’s Guild. Then he meets Thalia, an alluring but troubled dancing girl who offers him a way out—if he’ll help her kill a powerful nobleman. With the Guild falling apart, it just might be worth the risk. But when you live, breathe, and love in a world that’s forever flirting with death, the slightest misstep can be poison.
This was an enjoyable short little novella that really does setup the world for Midnight Thief. I can honestly say that I feel like this is going to be a series I’m going to highly enjoy!
The buildup and pacing of Poison Dance was swift and right to the chase. It did introduce the characters quite nicely and gave us a nice backdrop of who they are and where some of them might end up in the next book. And though it had a swift pace and buildup the plot was intriguing, deep, and pulled me in. I also enjoyed Blackburne’s writing style. Though I do wish there was more description, I had to keep in mind this was a novella, but regardless of that, the world is nicely built.
James, a deadly assassin and member of the Assassin Guild, piqued my interest. I enjoyed watching his brief story play out. He is a smart, fearsome young man and I enjoyed watching this character’s movement throughout the book. And I know I can’t wait to see just what role he’ll be playing in Midnight Thief.
There are also a few other characters that are introduced, some that intrigued me. The events, the conflict, that took placed moved the story forward and set up the world and plot nicely. I’m very excited where those elements will lead into the next book.
He was good at it, and over the years he grew used to the feel of blood on his hands.
All in all, Poison Dance was a quick, fast-paced, and a very enjoyable read. A great start to a series I am very much excited for! Blackburne has captured my attention and I can’t wait to see where this series is heading.
I do recommend this novella to those who are looking for a new high-fantasy series to get into.
