Review: Come to Me Quietly (Closer to You, #1) by A.L. Jackson

Title: Come to Me Quietly
Series: Closer to You, #1
Author: A.L. Jackson
Category: Romance/ Contemporary
Genre: New Adult/ Mature content
Rating: 5 stars out of 5
Aleena Moore is content with her life. She has goals and dreams and an easy smile. She also has a secret she holds locked inside.

Jared Holt believes he doesn’t deserve to love or be loved. He destroys everything he touches. Haunted by the mistake that shattered his life, he’s fled from the memory of that pain.

Jared doesn’t know why he’s compelled to return, but finds himself drawn back to the place where it all began. The exact place where it ended. When he runs into his childhood best friend, Aleena’s older brother Christopher, he agrees to share Christopher and Aleena’s apartment while he looks for a place of his own.

Aleena is no longer the little girl Jared remembers from his past and evokes feelings in him he never wanted to feel again. Terrified of destroying her, he fights to keep her away. But her touch is something he can’t resist—the touch that sealed his fate.

Their pasts are intertwined and their futures uncertain. The only truths they know are the secrets they whisper in the night.

 My Thoughts

I am so happy with myself that I picked up this book. Come to Me Quietly is a dark, gritty, messed up boy with a dark past and only one certain girl can save him, kind of book. And I love those kinds of books! Yeah, that theme has been played with, but I think that this book had a very nice feel to it and a uniqueness that made it a bit different.

A. L. Jackson has a really beautiful writing style. To me, it felt like poetry at times, the way the words and actions of the characters flowed and moved throughout the story. I loved that. And I think it was not only the really gritty, raw story line, but the characters  had me so glued to the pages.
"What do you see in me?" “I see beauty and pain. Joy and sorrow. I see the good and I see the bad . . . and I love it all.”
Aleena felt different to me from most heroines. She’s a strong character, but she felt real in her strength. When Jared comes back into her life, she knows of his darkness and she wants to help him. And her strength came in the form of her knowing she couldn’t erase his past, but accepting him, all of him. Dark past and all. I think that’s what I loved about her, she accepts people, flaws and all.

And I was really taken by Jared Holt. Yes, he has that dark, sexy, hotness about him that I love in my male characters. And though he came off as a bit of an ass, especially to Aleena in the beginning, this boy has a big heart. I could see it peeking around the rough edges of him. That’s what made me instantly connect with him and love him.

The relationship between Jared and Aleena is a complicated one; childhood friends with a deep past. I loved that. I usually don’t do that whole best friends turn lovers thing, but this one was so well written and felt real and natural. Their attraction and relationship developed nicely and it felt real. I could feel how both Jared and Aleena cared for each other and I could see/feel it growing. It felt like their souls connected when reading it. And I can't forget the steamy factor. These two are a really steamy couple!

The twist, Jared’s past, was so much fun, well, intense to read about! I honestly couldn’t really figure out what happened to him! And I loved that it took me awhile to figure it out! And his past really broke my heart! It really explains so much about him and why his is the way he is. Why he hurts and why he punishes himself. That made me sympathize with his character even more!
“It made me fucking crazy, and I fucking ruined it. I’m sorry I ruined it, Aly, but I warned you that I would.”
The building of the plot and the relationship of this story was well written. It built slowly but did not drag. The writing style pulled me in. The characters felt real, along with their personalities and actions. I became so attached to them. And I cannot wait to see them grow even more in the next book!

Come to Me Quietly was just such a beautiful story! It tore my heart up and yet made me smile! It was dark, gritty, intense, and wonderful! I definitely recommend this one to New Adult lovers who love a story about deep love, dark pasts, and finding understanding, all wrapped up in a dark package.

Review: The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Title: The Fault in Our Stars
Author: John Green
Category: Contemporary/ Romance
Genre: Young Adult
Rating: 5 stars out of 5
Diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer at 13, Hazel was prepared to die until, at 14, a medical miracle shrunk the tumours in her lungs... for now.

Two years post-miracle, sixteen-year-old Hazel is post-everything else, too; post-high school, post-friends and post-normalcy. And even though she could live for a long time (whatever that means), Hazel lives tethered to an oxygen tank, the tumours tenuously kept at bay with a constant chemical assault.

Enter Augustus Waters. A match made at cancer kid support group, Augustus is gorgeous, in remission, and shockingly to her, interested in Hazel. Being with Augustus is both an unexpected destination and a long-needed journey, pushing Hazel to re-examine how sickness and health, life and death, will define her and the legacy that everyone leaves behind.

 My Thoughts

There are really no words for this book. And I know that I cannot capture in a few words, or sentences, the way this story affected me. And it affected me intensively.  I knew that it would, but still, it really touched me. And though it made me cry, those big fat ugly tears, I am so happy I finally read it!

This book deals with some tough and very sad situations.  So of course it made my heart ache and break and cry, but it also made me smile. But what I loved so much about this is the characters. I really adored getting to know Hazel and Augustus. They made the story fun to read and, well, I got really attached to them.
“You don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world...but you do have some say in who hurts you. I like my choices.”
Hazel was unique, to me at least. I think I enjoyed her more cynical view of life, which was very strong at the beginning of the book. Which was understandable, having to deal with cancer in all forms, day in and day out, does make some cynical. But Hazel was extremely likable. She is very smart and a bit cocky, and she really pulled me into her story. I wanted to see what happened to her. Her personality is very strong and watching everything she goes through.. well.. it was just wow.

And I feel so hard for Augustus. I can’t really say just how wonderful this character was. I loved that he was so odd and he talked so much. But he had this really big heart and he saw the world really differently. And like Hazel he has been through quite a bit, so he too had a strong personality. One I really loved!

I loved how Hazel and Augustus’s personalities mixed. They were a great combination together and they were so cute together. I loved watching them grow and develop, and they really did grow so much during this book. I can’t write how much I just loved these characters!

Another thing I just loved was John Green’s writing style. I felt he really capture his characters and their uniqueness and of course their situations. I also loved the underlining humor of his writing style.  He captured such a beautifully tragic story so well.
“As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.”
The pacing and the building of the plot flowed well. I felt that everything just fit in this book. The characters were unique and interesting and I couldn’t help but love them and feel for their situation. Even the side characters crawled into my heart. The love that developed between Hazel and Augustus just stole my breath away. And though I did figure out the twist, it still shook me; shocked me.

I enjoyed everything about The Fault in Our Stars. It made me cry and it made me smile. It broke my heart yet made me feel wonderful. And though it was such an emotional read, I loved everything about it. I highly recommend this one, even if you don’t read emotional books such as this one. I feel everyone should give this book a try.

  White Hot Kiss
Title: White Hot Kiss
Series: The Dark Elements #1
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Category: Fantasy/ Paranormal/ Romance
Genre: Young Adult

ABOUT WHITE HOT KISS:
One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

EXCERPT:
“I don’t think of Zayne that way!”

She laughed. “What man-parts-loving female in this world doesn’t think of Zayne that way? I can barely keep myself breathing when I see him. All the guys in school have squishy waists. I can tell Zayne doesn’t. He’s the awesome sauce with extra sauce.”

That he was and he so didn’t have a squishy waist, but I tuned Stacey out at that point. I really did need to cram for this test and I also didn’t want my fantasies involving Zayne to occupy my mind right now. Especially after I’d woken up this morning, carefully tucked under the covers. The bed had smelled like him: sandalwood and crisp linen.

“Oh, sweet baby Jesus in a manger,” Stacey murmured.

I clenched my jaw, cupping my hands over my ears.

She jabbed me in the side with her elbow. At this rate I’d be covered in bruises before lunchtime.“Our bio class just got a billion times more interesting. And hotter, lots and lots hotter. Holy mother, I want to have his babies. Not now of course, but definitely later. But I’d like to start practicing soon.”

The cell wall is a thick and rigid layer covering the plasma something, something plant cells…

Stacey stiffened all of a sudden. “Oh my God, he’s coming—”

   Composed of fat and sugar—

Something slender and shiny fell from who knew where, landing in the middle of Sam’s notes. Blinking tightly, it took me a couple of seconds to recognize the faded and half peeled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sticker covering the back of the silver cell phone.

My heart slammed against my ribs. Gripping the edges of the notebook, I slowly lifted my gaze. Unnaturally beautiful golden eyes met mine.

   “You forgot this last night.”
