Review: Girl of Nightmares by Kendare Blake

Title: Girl of Nightmares
Series: Anna, #2
Author: Kendare Blake
Category: Paranormal/ Horror/ Romance
Genre: Young Adult
Rating: 4 stars out of 5
It's been months since the ghost of Anna Korlov opened a door to Hell in her basement and disappeared into it, but ghost-hunter Cas Lowood can't move on.

His friends remind him that Anna sacrificed herself so that Cas could live—not walk around half dead. He knows they're right, but in Cas's eyes, no living girl he meets can compare to the dead girl he fell in love with.

Now he's seeing Anna everywhere: sometimes when he's asleep and sometimes in waking nightmares. But something is very wrong...these aren't just daydreams. Anna seems tortured, torn apart in new and ever more gruesome ways every time she appears.

Cas doesn't know what happened to Anna when she disappeared into Hell, but he knows she doesn't deserve whatever is happening to her now. Anna saved Cas more than once, and it's time for him to return the favor.

My Review

I've just enjoyed this series so much. The paranormal elements that Blake mixed with her story really pulled me in and left me wanting more. Girl of Nightmares was just as beautifully written, creepy, and consuming as the first book.

Blake created a wonderful world filled with ghosts, ghouls, and magic. Her story was beautifully told that left a chill creeping up my spin.  Once I picked up this book, I couldn't put it down!

The only thing that deterred me was that I couldn’t remember a few events from the first book. So going in was a bit overwhelming, at first, but once I got a few chapters in things did slowly start coming back to me.
"She crossed over death to call me. I crossed through Hell to find her."
I still feel like Cas is the perfect male POV to read from. I just enjoy being inside his head so much. He wasn’t as cocky as he was in the first book, he felt more level headed, more sure of himself in ways. Though he is battling with more emotional events, I could feel that he has matured since the first book. I just adore him, quite honestly. And being inside his head while he did whatever he could to save Anna was an enjoyable experience.

Carmel and Thomas are some of the greatest side characters I have ever encountered. I just adored them as well. I loved that Thomas supported Cas no matter what. And though Carmel did have a bit of a stumble, in the end she really turned out to be another great friend to Cas. I loved that Blake added such strong friendships in her book.

This definitely is not your typical love story. And I loved that about this series. It shows a different kind of love.   Anna, being a dead girl, is not your typical love interest, but she is a strong character and she, once again, proves herself in the end. I enjoyed her because of what she went through and despite it all she was a good person, dead or not.  She is smart and selfless.
"If it's possible to be starstruck by the dead, then I guess that's what's happening."
I just love the creepy, paranormal world that Blake created. It was refreshing and unique. I adored the main character, loved the side characters, and just couldn’t get enough of the not-so-typical love interest. Girl of Nightmares was a wonderful read!

Quote of the week: Nicole Krauss

Quote of the week is a weekly bookish post.
Each Friday, I will pick one of my favorite quotes to share with you, my wonderful readers!!

Quote of the Week:

“Once upon a time there was a boy who loved a girl, and her laughter was a question he wanted to spend his whole life answering.”
― Nicole Krauss

Book Crazed Girl Update

The reason I chose a quote about love, when I usually choose a more bookish quote, is because today is mine and my husband's five year wedding anniversary! I cannot believe five years have past since I married my high school sweetheart. We've been together for nine years. It's hard to warp my head around that number, it doesn't seem possible. Not only is he my husband, but he is my best friend, my shoulder to lean on, and my confident. I have been blessed to have him in my life. So I chose a quote, as best as I could, to reflect that.

And I will also be gone the entire weekend, so I'll probably be MIA.

Also, I haven't been around as much lately because I've been busy working and I'm in the process of moving! We are leaving Jacksonville, NC behind. This weekend we will be looking at houses in Greensboro, NC.

Hugs for you all!

With love,

Sometimes, things that go bump in the night are real.

My name is Whitney Lane.  I’m sixteen years old and at first, I thought I was crazy.

I kept seeing shadows move along walls, and hearing whispers around corners, but whenever I looked, there was never anything there.

Until one day, there was.

Our world isn’t what we think.  There are things around us, good things, bad things, scary things.
Things that we tell ourselves aren’t real, but they are.

They’re very real, and they’re terrifying.

I’ve been swept up now, in a battle of good and evil, confused about love and what is supposed to be love, but isn’t.  I don’t know what to think anymore.  I can’t trust my emotions and I don’t know what is true.

There’s only one thing I know for sure.

Nothing is what it seems.

Excerpt:
Sometimes the things that go bump in the night are real.

Happy birthday to me.
I close my eyes and burrow into my pillow as I try to sleep, as I try to escape this life.
It’s a life I never thought I’d have, a life I most certainly don’t want.
I’m still feeling sorry for myself as the blackness of sleep finally overtakes me.
I don’t know what time it is when I shoot straight upward like a rocket.  Something had yanked me from the oblivion of sleep, something loud and shrill scraping my window.
My room is completely dark and I glanceat my clock in confusion.
3:00 a.m.
As my heart pounds hard against my ribcage, I quickly scan every corner of the room.
In the last few hours, dark shadows had migrated onto my pink walls, but they’re familiar, nothing out of the ordinary, although in the night, they seem twisted and scary.
I remain motionless as I allow the sleep-induced fog to clear from my brain.
As I sit, I feel common sense and logic slowly returning.
Of course nothing had touched my window because my bedroom is on the second floor. Nothing can reach it.  And there are no trees near enough to brush against it.  It was just a dream.
It was only a dream.
I chant it silently to myself like a mantra as I consciously slow my breathing down, hoping that my racing pulse will soon follow. It was only a dream.
But just as I’m calming down, I hear it again.
A high-pitched shrill shriek, reminiscent of fingernails on a chalkboard, scraping down my window. I gasp and pull my feet up to my chest, which is when I notice the temperature.
I notice because I can see my breath.
Timidly, I blow a puff out again, watching the way my breath turns white in the air.
Holy crap.  Oh my God.
What the hell?
The sound stops and stillness surrounds me once again, the silence so loud that it echoes in my ear.
Nothing moves around me, the shadows are perfectly still as they twist across my wall.  They look like mangled fingers and arms and legs, but they don’t move.
My legs are weak and shaking, but I know I have to move.   I have to move off my bed because it feels like something is under it.  Something terrifying.
With a leap, I bound across the room, my feet hitting the floor several feet away from the edge of my bed.
The floor is ice cold, as though it had been covered in a blanket of snow.
I’m trembling as I race to the far wall and check the thermostat.  Because that’s the only explanation.  I must’ve bumped it earlier, I must’ve turned the AC way down.
But the luminous numbers stare at me in contradiction.
74 degrees.
It must be broken.  It has to be broken.
My breath is coming in pants now, terrified, anxious pants.
My fear isn’t logical.  I know there’s nothing here.  I’m the only one in this room.
Or am I?
The air seems to push at me from all around, something dark, something heavy, something real.  Something unseen.
My fingers shake, my legs tremble, and then all of a sudden, they can no longer support my weight.  I go down like a pile of bricks, collapsing onto the floor.  I lie still because I can’t move, because something seems to sit on my chest, holding me down.
The shadows start to move, to slither across the walls, to reach and pull and dance.
I struggle to focus, to see what it is.
But all I can see are the numbers on the thermostat suddenly moving, rapidly counting down from 74 to 20.
Twenty degrees?
The air is frigid as I suck it in, as I try to pull the ice crystals into my mouth so I can breathe.
All of a sudden, there’s a blackness in front of me.  It hovers over me, a shapeless mass, sucking in the cells of the air, the atoms and the molecules.  It’s darker than the blackness of my room, blacker than the blackest black.
Something is here.
With me.
“Dad?” I whisper in a white puff.  Because what else could it be?
I reach out a finger to touch it, and then I can’t see anything else, because the darkness of it surrounds me, bleeding into everything else, even my vision.   The shriek is back, screaming into my ears, bleeding into my brain.
Then there’s nothing.

Reading order:
Lost To You ~ Book 0.5 (Lost to You is the prequel novella to Take This Regret and unnecessary to read before Take This Regret)
Take This Regret ~ Book 1
If Forever Comes ~ Book 2

My Review:

OH! A.L. Jackson you just love to play with emotions, don’t you??

If Forever Comes was a heart aching read. It played with my emotions, but I loved it! My heart really went out to the characters in this series. They have been through so much already and they were really tested in If Forever Comes.

Elizabeth had grown so much by the end of Take This Regret, and I was so happy when she finally opened up her heart again. But in this book Elizabeth gets thrown a whopper of a curve ball. This tested her quite a bit in love, strength, being open, and allowing pain in. Though some of her actions made me want to shake her, I did understand them. But she was really able to overcome the obstacles in this book and she really became such a strong character in the end.

Oh, Christian! This poor man has been through quite a bit in the series and he, like Elizabeth, really went through something quite heartbreaking. Something I would never want anyone to go through! He, too, has grown since the first book, but the emotional turmoil challenged him in completely different ways then he has face before. What made me so proud of just how much Christian has grown were his actions in this book. He really proved he is a great man and a wonderful character.

Again the amazing chemistry between Christian and Elizabeth is very present, even when they were at odds and facing difficult decisions. I loved watching that burn, that spark they have. It is one of the elements I have enjoyed so much about this series.  They have a very powerful bond and a deep love.
“Maybe my steps were slow. Maybe it was because I was relishing each one, like each represented an obstacle we'd had to climb, the trials we'd had to overcome. Maybe each one was a triumph, each a celebration. Even though each step was measured, in reality, I was running toward him.Running toward my forever.Because I realized I didn't have one without Christian.
He was my all.”
The story did have its more slow moments, but the pace was just to my liking. The buildup of the conflict and the resolution had me on the edge of my seat. And though I did figure out the conflict of the story, it didn’t deter my love for the book.

The conclusion of Elizabeth and Christian's story was perfect for them, and everything wrapped up so nicely. I thoroughly have enjoyed being a part of their story.  Both characters finally moved on from their past, let go of old hurts, and embraced their future. They each have grown so much. This was a wonderful, gripping, consuming series and I am so happy with its ending.

  Excerpt:
“You sure Evan doesn’t mind me being here?”
“He probably hates that you’re staying the night, but he’ll get over it.” I take a step toward him and pat him on the shoulder, marveling at the solid feel of muscle beneath my palm, beneath the thick fabric of his sweatshirt. Has he gotten taller since the last time I saw him? Broader? He’s so big, standing next to him makes me feel small. “Do you need anything else?” I remove my hand from his shoulder, wishing I could touch him more.
“Nah. I’m gonna change, brush my teeth and go to sleep.” He smiles, looking cute, like a little boy and my heart flutters. When he reaches for the hem of his sweatshirt I step away, watch in silent fascination as he pulls the fabric over his head, taking the T-shirt he’s wearing beneath it upward so I catch a glimpse of his flat, perfect stomach, the little trail of dark hair that starts just under his navel.
I’m breathless, my skin is tingling and when he tosses the sweatshirt onto the couch, I start to walk backwards. “Okay well, good night.” I need to get away from him before I do something really stupid.
     Like jump him.
“Night, Reverie,” he calls after me as I hurry to my bedroom. Glancing over my shoulder, I find him watching me with that penetrating, thoughtful gaze and I turn away, practically tripping over my feet in the hall. I rush into my room, shutting the door quietly before I slump against it, closing my eyes and pressing my forehead against the rough wood.
My feelings for him haven’t stopped. I still want him. I’m still in love with him. So why am I denying myself from being with him? Because I’ve changed and I’m worried he won’t accept me for who I really am? And because my life is so crazy the last thing I need is another complication to muck it all up?
Valid reasons, but why would I deprive myself from being with him? He’s the only one who understood me. Who listened to me. Who cared about me.
     I think he still does.
Cracking open my eyes, I push away from the doorway and shut off the light before I crawl into bed. I lay there in the dark, listening to him move about inside the bathroom, which is right next to my bedroom. He finishes brushing his teeth before he exits the room and I swear I can feel him standing on the other side of my closed door, waiting. Listening for any sign of life coming from within.
I can’t move. I’m frozen, holding my breath, waiting for him to knock on the door, to turn the knob, anything to show that he wants to see me. I want him to both respect my brother’s wishes and defy them. I want him overcome with need yet cautious. I want…everything.
     All of him.
Disappointment crashes through me when I realize he is definitely obeying Evan’s wishes. He doesn’t sneak into my room, doesn’t attempt to talk to me, nothing. I should be happy. Pleased that he doesn’t want to upset anyone.
     Instead, I’m sad.
Rolling over on my side, I punch the pillow beneath my head and settle in for the night, willing myself to fall asleep. I get to spend pretty much the entire weekend with him. Maybe we can work it out then since we’ll have plenty of time. But for now I’ll have to settle for        Nick visiting me…
   Only in my dreams.

Review: Opposition by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Title: Opposition
Series: Lux, #5
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Category: Paranormal/ Romance/ Sci-Fi
Genre: Young Adult (mature)
Rating: 5 BILLIONS stars out of 5
Katy knows the world changed the night the Luxen came.

She can't believe Daemon welcomed his race or stood by as his kind threatened to obliterate every last human and hybrid on Earth. But the lines between good and bad have blurred, and love has become an emotion that could destroy her—could destroy them all.

Daemon will do anything to save those he loves, even if it means betrayal.

They must team with an unlikely enemy if there is any chance of surviving the invasion. But when it quickly becomes impossible to tell friend from foe, and the world is crumbling around them, they may lose everything— even what they cherish most—to ensure the survival of their friends…and mankind.

War has come to Earth. And no matter the outcome, the future will never be the same for those left standing.

My Review:

I can't really believe that this is the last book in the Lux Series. And of course I don't want it to be. But it really was the perfect ending to this wonderful series. Katy and Daemon got the ending they so deserve. I can’t think of a better conclusion for this wonderful series, either. Jennifer wrapped everything up so, so nicely and I feel that Katy and Daemon, along with the rest of the characters, got a wonderful and well deserved ending. I have absolutely no complaints or think the book couldn't have been better, because it was magnificent!
Every cell of my being demanded that I protect her, even though I knew she was hella capable of doing so herself, but I wanted her far away from here.
Katy and Daemon have grown so much since their first encounter, at Daemon’s front door. Both really have been tested in so many ways, but they faced those challenges head on. And I loved that they have never backed down. Katy found such a powerful inner strength and Daemon found a love like no other. Both have grown together and have had amazing inner growth as well. I adore them each so much! They really have become one of my absolute favorite characters and couple, not only because of their deep love, but because of their character growth and inner strength.

The love between Daemon and Katy is just so powerful and I really think that Jennifer made that come through remarkably well.  I love that they always stood together no matter what, no matter the obstacles. I just find them perfect, so perfect for each other, and I know I will always love them.

I also have to mention Dee, Dawson, and Beth, along with the other characters – that includes Hunter and Serena! Yes, they made quite a few appearances in Opposition and I just loved that!  I felt they too got the ending they deserved. I can’t mention a lot about what Dee went through in the book, but I can say I am very satisfied with her growth and how she was at the end of the book as well.  Jennifer created an amazing cast of characters, each one unique and quite interesting.

The book progressed at such a good pace and the ending felt very well-rounded. Each character had such good dynamic, and their growth was really noticeable. The storyline was deep and very original. Jennifer did a brilliant job at making aliens sexy and so very interesting. She created an intricate world filled with such diversity.
“I'm game for anything with you, Daemon Black.”
Opposition was action-packed, brimming with intense moments that had me on the edge of my seat. It had gripping moments I couldn't believe were happening and moments that just broke my heart. There were also moments that filled me with bubbly happiness and glee. This was a wonderful, wonderful conclusion to a series that will forever be close to my heart.

I know I will always love this series, always love Katy and Daemon, and I know I will be re-reading their story multiple times. Over and over. And each time, I know, I will fall even more in love with them, their story, and their love. I highly encourage other to at least give this series a try!
