Series: Article 5, #2
Author: Kristen Simmons
Rating: 5 stars out of 5
The second installment in Kristen Simmons's fast-paced, gripping YA dystopian series.
After faking their deaths to escape from prison, Ember Miller and Chase Jennings have only one goal: to lay low until the Federal Bureau of Reformation forgets they ever existed.
Near-celebrities now for the increasingly sensationalized tales of their struggles with the government, Ember and Chase are recognized and taken in by the Resistance—an underground organization working to systematically take down the government. At headquarters, all eyes are on the sniper, an anonymous assassin taking out FBR soldiers one by one. Rumors are flying about the sniper’s true identity, and Ember and Chase welcome the diversion….
Until the government posts its most-wanted list, and their number one suspect is Ember herself.
Orders are shoot to kill, and soldiers are cleared to fire on suspicion alone. Suddenly Ember can’t even step onto the street without fear of being recognized, and “laying low” is a joke. Even members of the Resistance are starting to look at her sideways.
With Chase urging her to run, Ember must decide: Go into hiding…or fight back?
I swear, I just can’t get enough of this series. The book was filled with great action, intense scenes, and wonderful character growth. The characters have come quite a long ways, but you can still see that they have a ways to go still. I enjoyed the challenges that both Ember and Chase overcame and how they not only grew together but separately as well. The world is still dark and gritty, hard and testing.
“I hated the distance between us. It left me unsettled, unbalanced. Like the good parts of myself were fading.”
I just love the characters in this series. Chase and Ember are still so strong together no matter what they face. Though they are still trying to overcome the obstacles they faced in the previous book, you can see that they still care for each other no matter what has happen or been said. They both have grown since the beginning and I was so happy with them at the end. Even though they still have a bit more growing to do, I know they will stay by each other’s sides. And that is why I love them so much. I feel that authors should write more romances like theirs. No matter what, no matter the opposition they faced, no matter what lay between them, their love was strong and their faith in each other unshakable.
Then we have the side characters. The cast of characters is quite diverse and I love that diversity. I love that some characters come back and have a chance to prove that they are good, like Sean. I loved his character and the development of his relationship with Chase and Ember.
The pacing was nice but also kept a fast pace. It kept me glued to the pages and I just couldn’t wait to see what next event unfolded. A few surprises did take place, things I didn’t see coming. I do have a haunch as to what will unfold in the next book, and I can’t wait to see if I am right. I loved the detail that Simmons gives her world. She makes it feel impeccably real and so very scary. And again, she isn’t afraid to test her characters.
“He cleared his throat, fixing his eyes on the road. "Why are you looking at me like that?"All the hard edges within me had shimmered and gone soft."You said I was beautiful."He smirked and settled back in his seat. "I guess I did.”
All in all, this is a brilliant second book in the series. I was enthralled by the chilling world that Simmons has created, and though it is dark and gritty, I enjoyed being lost in it. I fall hard in love with most of the characters and I love watching them fight back, learn, overcome, grown, and love. I really can’t get enough of this series.
